[There's a groan and a crunch of leaves before silence, and then...]

...was I just doing something?

[[ooc: Yes. Cloud has forgotten that he died. Why? Because his Death Penalty is short term memory loss. Think Dory from Finding Nemo. He will occasionally repeat himself or completely forget a conversation you had with him just moments before. Not all the time, though! That would get annoying. o/ ]]

Did you forget again? Denzel's almost as old as I am.

[At the question about Zack, however, Simon falters, scratching his cheek. Right... Cloud had forgotten the fight, too.]

Ah... right. Zack got into a fight while you-- uh. Yeah. But he's fine! Just resting.

[Did Simon say before? Cloud couldn't remember at all, but casts him a suspicious glance at the last part.]

Who'd he get into a fight with?

[....Oh boy. Here came the hard part.]

It... seems like the experiment affected... Sephiroth, as well.

[It was like a weight suddenly dropping down atop Cloud's shoulders, and he jerked, hand lashing out to grab Simon's arm. Something in his chest tightened painfully, and he had to fight to keep himself from squeezing Simon, eyes wide and skin white.]

...He attacked Zack? Is he still-

[Even with how much bigger than Cloud he is, Simon nearly flinches at the grip on his arm. Cloud was being careful, but Mako was not to be treated lightly. Gently he lifts a hand to touch Cloud's, trying to pry it off his arm, or at least get him to relax.]

It's okay, don't worry. I took care of it.

[Simon's hand atop his and the slight wince is enough to remind him and Cloud yanks his hand back with a murmured apology; he clenches it to keep it from shaking. He trusted Simon, of course, and somehow could tell that Simon was telling the truth about settling the matter, but-

Well, it was Sephiroth. He had a habit of popping up to fuck things over in the worst possible way.]

...what happened...?

[Simon frowns at that, giving his arm a near-imperceptible rub and shrugging it off. There were more important things, and it's not like Cloud had hurt him.]

I don't know exactly. I walked into the middle of the fight - Zack was already hurt, and... you were fighting Sephiroth. He was pretty out of it, though - definitely not the Sephiroth I remember. [He shakes his head, disliking the memory and the feelings it bubbled up within him.] He... was about to kill you. That's when I stepped in.

Shit. [Cloud spat out the curse before thinking, and dragged a hand through his hair.]

...Simon, thank you. I...well, I hope I remember what happens, but...

If you forget, I'll remind you. Don't worry about Sephiroth, or what happened... any of it. By the end of the week, I'm sure it'll be over, like it always is, and life will be normal again. I'm sure Sephiroth will be, too.

You can't honestly expect me to just not worry. [Cloud takes a deep breath, and somehow manages to offer Simon a smile, albeit a shaky one.] But I'll try.

I think I'll feel better at the end of the week, though.

[Simon gives Cloud an equally shaky smile, though for different reasons entirely.]

Trying is better than nothing. I'll take that, for now.

[Cloud shoots a confused glance towards Simon before dawning realization sets in and he has the decency to look ashamed.]

...sorry. That wasn't what I meant.

[Simon smiles again and shakes his head, waving off the apology and continuing towards the house.]

I know what you meant. It's okay, I promise. It doesn't bother me that much.

[Cloud huffs a bit but closes the door after them, glancing around for a sign of Tifa or Denzel.]

...I don't see anyone. [He starts down the hallway towards his room, peering in the doors as he passes; he kind of wanted to see them both and reassure them.]

Weird, I thought they'd be here. Zack's in your room, though, if you want to see him.

[Simon follows along at a more reserved pace, not wanting to intrude upon Cloud's little reunion with his best friend, even if he couldn't recall being separated in the first place.]

What if Sephiroth...? [Cloud can't finish the sentence, voice caught in his throat as that hated fear snatched hold of him again.]

[Simon frowns, looking a bit miffed, and gives Cloud a little shove, adjusting the drill-staff at his shoulder.]

Go see Zack. I'll look around for them, I'm sure they're not far.

[Cloud stumbles a little before straightening, sending Simon an irritated glance.]

Y'know, I'm not comfortable with the idea of you hunting around for him either, even if you beat him.

[Simon lifts a brow at Cloud, one hand moving to rest on his hip. Well, maybe it was time to come clean. It wasn't boasting, anyway - just the simple truth.]

Papa, I broke Masamune. I don't think he'll be attacking anyone for a while.

[Cloud's about to scoff at the idea before he stops himself short with a realization.

...Simon doesn't lie. He'd never lied, not once, in all the time Cloud had known him. A little shaken, Cloud sends Simon an incredulous gaze.]

[Simon blinks, then fidgets and averts his eyes, suddenly uncomfortable. Cloud looks so incredulous he can't bring himself to mention how easy it had been.]

Uh... er... yeah. I was going to fix it later, when he's sane...

[...Cloud's actually not sure if he likes this development. Simon, that little boy, growing up to be a juggernaut? It wasn't the idea of Simon having power that worried him.

It was the idea of Simon needing it.

Cloud swallows, schooling his expression into something a little less goggle-eyed and a little more wary, and sends Simon a nod.]

...be careful. He's still dangerous.

I know.

[Simon lifts his eyes and nods, determined now. He has people to protect again, a cause to fight for. That's where his greatest strength comes from. He looks at Cloud with the strength and experienced of someone well adjusted to war, and lifts his chin.]

I won't let anything happen - to me, or anyone else he wants to hurt. I promise.

[A special spark of connection lit up at that moment, and Cloud's eyes met Simon's with a deep understanding, beyond words. This was his Simon, true, the boy he'd looked after and adopted for a few months, but this was also a man who understood pain, suffering, duty and strength. It was upsetting, on one level.

And on another, it made Cloud's chest swell with pride.]

Right. Come back safe.

Always do.

[Simon grinned, giving Cloud the same cheery salute as before, then turning away and heading off down the hall to find the rest of their family. It was time for a real reunion.]
