If you don't have a Lifestream keeping your Planet alive, what's holding it together?

I suppose our equivalent would be aer. It's a type of gas created within the planet. In its most stable form, aer becomes matter.

It's created naturally. As aer is consumed, the aer krene release more to replace it.

I'm not sure even the Malnosso know that. Though considering what happens when they're removed, it's likely to be related to be our wings.
